ELIK @ BROOKLYNITE

TONIGHT @ BROOKLYNITE GALLERY ! 7-10pm ELIK "SNAKE BITE" DJ KOOL HERC PERFORMS

Even today, if you walk around the streets of New York City with your chin up, you'll see the work of ELIK, who seamlessly exists between 'street art' and graffiti. After leaving his mark in the form of innovative roller tags, wheat-pastes, throw-ups, and retro-fitted tin signs, ELIK made like a person on the side of a milk carton and vanished from the New York City art scene in 2005.

Now, returning for a project encompassing his broad range of styles inside one space for the first time since he left, the artist "formerly known" as ELIK-- hasn't exactly changed his name, nor has he stopped making work, both on and off the streets in his new location. Truth be told, away from the New York spotlight, ELIK’s been stockpiling imagery and text bits, racking up points with new complex letter-styles and crushing uncharted territory.

Inspired by all things discarded, ELIK’s indoor work is comprised largely of paintings and intricate collages informed by typography and appropriated images from various media of our throw away culture. His thoughts are pieced together utilizing xerox copies, original material from vintage magazines, books, found scraps, advertisements and invented images, to create a unique visual language.

For his project at Brooklynite, ELIK’s decided to take his work beyond the pieces created for the show. The installations and soundtrack he’s developed in and outside the space is meant to fully engaged the viewers senses.

STEN & LEX & GAIA

Nuart friends and family Sten & Lex are joined by NYC's Gaia at Brooklynite Gallery next week for what's shaping up to be an outstanding show.

Their recent show at Rome's CO2 gallery sneaked under most people's radar, here's hoping that Brooklynite and their online fraternity can give this the attention it deserves.

S & L's meticulous and unique approach to stencil art is truly something to behold, it pushes the boundaries of an artform renowned and developed for its *"quick hitness" into a new & more reflective territory. Contemporary ? yes ! But also a touch of the ancient and eternal.

* yes, we're inventing the vocabulary as we go. Sorry about that, it's still early.
