HELLS HALF ACRE

Launching the 12th October, Lazarides in collaboration with The Old Vic Tunnels invites you to their newest off-site exhibition, Hell's Half Acre.

Interaction with the works will be encouraged as part of this multi-sensory experience.

Hell's Half Acre will be open for viewing from 12th to 17th October, 6pm till 11pm Tuesday to Thursday, with extended hours over the weekend. Entry to the exhibition will be free, but as space is limited you will need to book ahead.

JOSÈ PARLA THE CONCORD PROJECT

Not sure if I fully understand this project, but seems Jose Parla has been commissioned by Concord Pacific, Canada's largest Community builder" to produce a mural for one of their development projects. The work is immense and looks pretty amazing. Look forward to seeing the piece in situ.

KNOW HOPE & SHOW AND TELL

I first stumbled across my first Know Hope in Palestine back in 2006, a small paste up on the side of the road next to the wall, and though I was surrounded by large scale works from Banksy, Blu, Swoon and numerous other internationally recognised artists, it was this small A2 paste up of a character holding his heart out to the wall that really struck home, it was also the reason we invited him to participate in the following Nuart Festival.

Know Hope - There Is Nothing Dear (There Is Too Much Dear)

Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to welcome the Israeli artist known as Know Hope to his first solo exhibition in Canada.

Know Hope is best known for his street art, in which he depicts characters through several different story lines. The predominant theme within his work is the need for momentary connection in daily reality. Or, in other words, the everyday human struggle.

This exhibition examines the idea of the collective memory in comparison to the personal memory. Through the growing but steady vocabulary of imagery in his work, Know Hope attempts to research how and why we tend to hang on to memory, despite it having an inevitable ephemeral nature.

Know Hope has exhibited his art interenationally in galleries, art fairs, and on the streets around the world.

NATE FRIZZELL

Nate Frizzell ‘I Should Know Who I Am By Now’

Artist Nate Frizzell opens his second solo exhibition with the gallery after
recent shows in the UK and New York. The new exhibit continues to
revolve around the themes of self-discovery through an examination of
the human condition.

The exploration of personal identity and individual choices made over
the course of a lifetime are viewed in Frizzell’s winter themed paintings
and his first sculptural elements.

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 6th, 7-10pm

BROOKLYN STREET ART INTERVIEW

Recently had the pleasure of answering a few questions from Street Art partners in crime over at Brooklyn Street Art.

From BROOKLYN STREET ART
Art Saves lives

The small but very expensive (if you are not a resident) and oil rich Coastal town of Stavenger in Norway must be feeling a bit blue right now. Nuart 2010 artists cleaned up, packed up their tools and left after two weeks of painting monumental murals for the town’s folk to enjoy during the long, dark winter months ahead.

This years’ Street Artists included Dotmasters, Dolk, EVOL, Sten & Lex, Vhils, and ROA, among others. As in the past 5 years under this curator, the ‘10 group is a stellar selection of talent that is helping define what direction Street Art is heading.

The offerings this year were super sized and in many cases bold in color. All of the participants this year were painters, masters at their craft and supremely independent. Martyn Reed, curator and visionary engine behind this elaborate but accessible street art festival doesn’t limit himself to one large festival – instead he marries it with a prestigious electronic-based music festival he created as a result of his years as a DJ. This years’ NuMusic festival featured performances by luminaries like Krautrock grandaddies Neu! and American hip-hop cornerstone Grandmaster Flash.

The affable bad boy Reed took a moment this week to look at his route to success so far and tell BSA about what the Nuart festival is and why it is important to him.

Brooklyn Street Art: Putting on a festival of this magnitude must be a big task. How do you do it?

Martyn Reed: Actually...

VHILS CLOSE UP

Nuart Tour-35, originally uploaded by Jollyaard.
Great close up of the Vhils piece. The portrait is a very well known image of a Norwegian fisherman from the turn of the century, turned out that the wall we were working on used to be a factory for packing sardines, Stavanger's prime industry at the time.

The owner of the wall was shocked to find we had two Portuguese artists painting a Norwegian fisherman and proceeded to produce an old label from a Sardine can written in Portuguese. Apparently it used to be the factories main export country.

A happy coincidence or a very clever curatorial decision, we'll let you decide.

TRESPASS : A VIDEO INTRODUCTION

Nice little video introduction to the Trespass book by Taschen, particularly like the quote from Martha Cooper, " I think the common thread amongst all the artists in the book, no matter what they were doing, is that their urge to do it was more powerful than any kind of rule or regulation against doing it".

Trespass: A History of Uncommissioned Urban Art featuring interviews by Marc and Sara Schiller (Wooster Collective) Carlo McCormick, WK Interact, Anne Pasternak, Martha Cooper.

DOLK FOR NUART 2010

The first large scale Dolk went up in Stavanger during this years Nuart, this was shot shortly after completion and is the final piece on the Nuart "Landmark" tour. Unfortunately rain from hell fell from the skies before, during and after, well, we say fell, it actually rained sideways, and the work took a serious beating. Whilst we're all for the natural degradation of Street Art and believe it's a natural part of the aesthetic, we're still considering touching this one up.

NUART "LANDMARK" TOUR

The town's people turned out in force on Sunday for the first of Nuart's "Landmark" street art tours. Thanks to Carl Fredrick for shooting this great little vid and to speakers Kristal and GT for their impressive dedication to the cause !
