(____)CAPITALISM?
____ Capitalism?
What happens if you mash an elitist academic institution like the Norwegian School of Economics with the anti-authoritative counter-cultural street art movement?
There is only one way to find out…
Featuring works and talks from Eine, Escif, M-City, Dolk, Hyuro, Evan Roth & Tristan Manco.
The event will culminate on Sept 6th with a full day of seminars and panel debates on the topic Street Art v's Capitalism.
The Project
The project offers a unique opportunity to bring the work of often subversive and anti authoritarian political artists into the “lion’s den” of the economic and political elite. It is a rare chance to generate cultural debate on themes often overlooked by more mainstream institutions. For Street Art, location is everything; context and content are ultimately the most measurable difference between what is written on a bathroom wall and what is placed on the street. This project offers one of the most ideal locations to engage with themes that explore the nature between art and economics, NGO’s and business, humanities and science, idealism and the cold harsh realities of some free market economic theories.“_____ Capitalism?” is set to be the world’s first site-specific Street Art exhibition whose themes are already firmly contextualized by the actual walls the work is to be produced on. The work featured in “______ capitalism?” will be emblematic of a topical shift in contemporary art practice away from the glare of the “White Cube” and consensus based public art, to a more direct interventionist strategy of placing normally unmediated and unsanctioned works in urban environments.
From Ad busting critiques to political and polemical murals, “______capitalism?” aims to present for the wider public, the opportunity to engage with an institution that sits at the heart of most of our futures. Street Art is also ideally placed to question the hegemony of consensus based public art and the cooption of our public spaces, often “public” only in name, for corporate profit.

THE SAN & ESCIF SHOW
One we'd love to see.
We are proud to invite you to our upcoming solo show, next 30th June, at Fifty24SF.
“See you in Croatan” is an experimental research project which will cross the lives and experiences of two friends in a random road trip across the west coast of the United States. As far away as possible from doctrines, imperialisms and linear reasoning. Searching for beauty in errors and fortuitous tools. Working with intuition and hazard; trying to light relations, transitions and processes; working with research as the way itself; understanding chaos as an ideal space for creation.

SAN & ESCIF'S ROADSHOW

Intriguing !
Spanish street and fine artists, San and Escif, have been traveling with Upper Playground all around the West Coast, painting along the way, finding inspiration, and building a body of work that will be on display at FIFTY24SF, starting on June 30, 2011.
FIFTY24SF Gallery presents “See you in Croatan” a road show by San & Escif opening on June 30th, 2011.

From Escif:
I’ve spent a few days thinking about the project, and about the way we are approaching it. The idea of generating a third language seems like it’s not working very well, at least not in a practical way. Certainly it is a path that should become stronger during the journey, but so far it has seemed to be more of an impediment than the correct path. We already knew that teamwork is very complex, but I think it is a lot harder when the roles on the team are not well established. Because then the fight between the two egos grow to see who is the one directing the movie (I´m thinking out loud) and its something that gets more complex when the two directors (you and I) have such different ways of working.
From San:
I completely understand what you say. I think we have to be practical, although we both like to navigate riskier terrain than we normally would on our own. Team work is hard, and even more so when obsessive perfectionists like us work together, each with our own story, but it is what it is. When I made the two drawings that I sent you, I always thought that what I was doing was twisting my work a little bit to get closer to a new “skin”, not so much trying to invent a third language. I think that´s exactly where the focus of the expo should be, in making an effort to get out of our safe zone and dig into something a little less personal, but using our powers, of course…

ESCIF, PARTIAL BUFF !
Just received this interesting mail from Escif regarding a couple of his earlier pieces that have been partially buffed, very odd.
From Escif
Hello all,
I was walking in Valencian historic center when I found some walls I´ve painted in last weeks. But I found my pieces partially covered. I don´t know who does it, but it´s strange that only sentences where buffed!
Local elections in Valencia will be next month, so I suppose that politicians are afraid that people can think a little about. Incredible that they doesn´t covered completely, because they make a clear censorship. Beautiful drawings can remain, but strange words must been buffed.
Silence contains all languages!
