Banksy

Banksy is a world-renowned Graffiti artist who has been satirizing and reinvigorating the art world since the 1980’s. Banksy isn’t a graphic designer, but I interpret him as a graphic artist and visual communicator as all his pieces have a purpose and key principle behind them.
Banksy is sometimes seen as an art terrorist, he is never seen on camera and no one is sure who he actually is. Despite this Banksy isn’t shy but he is confrontational in his artwork. His work is often controversial and political in context to outline a desired message, creating a high level tone to promote his endeavours as a suggested creative strategy. In context, using an individual and notorious stance, he plays with the elements that surround shock tactics, drawing in the attention of his desired audience, the media, as proven in his project in Palestine. I find Banksy inspirational, not just his work but also his mindset and creative thinking. He targets his work around many societal issues of the modern day, mainly to communicate a message and involve the attention of the media, but also to influence the lives of today’s society, by encouraging us as a nation to speak up, be daring and influence others. Clearly inspired by Banksy the work of contemporary graffiti artist Philip Gabriel takes on a similar creative strategy. He plays on political elements and their effect on today’s economy, in a similar production style to Banksy.

BANKSY. THE ANTICS ROADSHOW.

Children of Men

Could the timing be any better/worse ? Banksy produced TV special charting the history of public disorder. Might need a post script for this one.

BANKSY : THE ANTICS ROADSHOW.

Saturday 13 August
10.45pm
Channel 4

An hour-long special produced by Banksy charting the history of behaving badly in public, from anarchists and activists to attention seeking eccentrics.

Contributors include Michael Fagan talking about breaking into the Queen's bedroom: 'I looked into her eyes, they were dark'; and Noel Godin, who pioneered attacking celebrities with custard pies: 'Instead of a bullet I give them a cake'.

Explaining his reasoning behind the show, Banksy said: 'Basically I just thought it was a good name for a TV programme and I've been working back from there'.

Narrated by Kathy Burke and produced by Jamie D'cruz, The Antics Roadshow examines the stories behind some of the most audacious stunts of recent times and what motivates the perpetrators, from mindless boredom to heartfelt political beliefs.

It includes a world exclusive first interview with the man responsible for putting the turf Mohican on Winston Churchill's head.

LIFE IMITATES ART IMITATES...

The stance, the brick, the flowers..life imitates art imitates life..or what's more commonly known as "Photoshop". I guess this won't be the first.

NEW FROM BANKSY

Almost didn't post this, but then realised that would be taking Street Art far more seriously than perhaps we should, because it's stupid little inconsequential back to basic pieces like this, that got us into street art in the first place. I guess this won't be getting a perspex covering anytime soon. Or will it ?...

OUTSIDE IN

OUTSIDE IN from NUART on Vimeo.

Photo : John Roger

OUTSIDE IN. STAVANGER NORWAY
CLOSES AUG 7TH.
Featuring 140 works from over 30 of the worlds leading urban artists..

Banksy, Os Gemeos, JR, Blu, Blek le Rat, Barry McGee, Ed Templeton, Mark Gonzales, Shepard Fairey, Dolk, Dan Witz, Borf, Faile, Jose Parla, Jeremy Geddes, David Shrigley, David Choe, Dotmasters, Swoon, Bast, Logan Hicks, Escif, Herakut, Ha Ha, Nick Walker, Charles Krafft, Martha Cooper, Steve Powers, Kaws, Retna, Chris Stain, Skewville, M-City, Date Farmers, Mark Jenkins & more..

We were looking at Deitch’s Art in the Streets and thought there were a few important artists missing. We were also a tad jealous so thought we’d knock up our own little provincial version here in Sunny Stavanger. Pop 120 000.

Dug through the portfolio’s and ripped everything down from the office and homestead walls and voila. 140 works from 30 of the worlds leading practioners of Street and Urban Art (or something like that), From Jeremy Geddes in Australia to Bäst in New York, David Shrigley in the UK to Charles Krafft in Seattle. The Gonz and Ed Templeton to Banksy and Os Gemeos AND BEYOND... I think you’ll agree, we pushed the envelope on what can rightly be termed "urban art", we've seen street art fans tastes develop far beyond a liking for the early humorous one layer stencil (Thanks Banksy) and it now embraces the likes of Hyperrealist oil painters such as Geddes as well as.. well, you get the point I guess.

The framing bill almost killed us, but what the hell, we have our own little expo. Over a thousand people through the doors and this little unlikely wooden housed city on the West Coast of Norway again, rekindles its love affair with all things 21st century street.

OUTSIDE IN. COMING SOON

Thought we'd have a little show..Kinda my MOCA wish list. Here's the obligatory blurb..

Following the acclaimed and ongoing international success story of Stavanger’s Nuart Festival as well as last years “Lowlife” exhibition at Stavanger Kunstforening, Reed Projects is set to consolidate the regions rising reputation for providing a home for this, the 21st Centuries most dynamic artform by unleashing a brand new show dedicated to Street and Urban Art.

Spread across 220m2 of space, Skur 2, a beautifully converted Victorian warehouse on the city harbour front will house works from over 30 of the worlds leading urban artists including Scandinavia’s largest collection of Banksy works alongside new and exclusive pieces from Norway’s Dolk.

Part museum show, part contemporary art exhibition and part urban art boutique, Outside In is nothing if not ambitious, the show will present the myriad of ways in which Street Artists explore and tackle a multitude of techniques, both old and new. Drawings, watercolours, etchings, oil paintings, acrylics, lithographs, screen prints, photography, film and much more will all be on show.

Outside In aims to question and challenge the perception that Street Art is primarily concerned with graffiti and the spray can. A good selling point for gallerists and lifestyle media as well its detractors, but as Outside In aims to show, far from reality.

Outside In shows urban artists who are equally at home tackling antiquated etching techniques, watercolours, drawing and oil painting as they are with a spraycan and marker. As likely to be found hunched over a litho stone as they are scaling trackside fences, “Street” artists have, over the years, explored and mastered crafts not popular in contemporary fine art practice for generations.

Outside In is set to be the countries first major group exhibition (outside of Nuart) dedicated to the most dynamic and democratic art movement of the 21st Century.

Outside In opens on July 01st and runs until Aug 07.…The show will be re-activated over these weeks with several exciting support events currently being planned.

BANKSY AT MOCA

Our friend Butterfly sent us a batch of images from the MoCA preview. Check out the full set below. I must say, I was a tad surprised how few of the core group of artists tackled the issue of the work in the context of a museum and for the main, created set designed "street scenes",  maybe this was the point, but can't help feeling it's all a little "theatrical".

Banksy, irreverent as ever, seems to have been one of the few that took this on, with a sly nod to his "museums are trophy cabinets for the rich" quote, he digs out a series of "historical" stencils and earlier works and presents them in a very dry and quite mundane manner. I've read numerous reviews and blogs that seem to be missing the point and have this down as a rare "Banksy" fail.

However, one look at the main wall (top image), his main contribution to the show, an immense stained glass church window made up of tags created by local kids, and we see where he's going with this.

Street Art and Graffiti in a museum context requires your complete submission, to academia, to curatorship, to the institution and commodification in general. All bow to the authority of tradition. Art is serious, submit, and we'll show you the way.

And all this before Deitch in a post festival interview said of Graffiti writers..

Jeffrey Deitch 'If you harness your talent you can be in a museum some day...."

Nice one Banksy.

PETER KENNARD, ORIGINAL ART ACTIVIST

There's an awful lot of street and urban artists that owe this chap a massive debt of gratitude. The UK's original art activist, more punk than you punk, more street than the Streets and "keeping it real" long before we had the option.

Shocking, haunting and unsettling, the photomontages of Peter Kennard live long in the memory. For the past four decades Peter Kennard has consistently challenged power structures and injustice, from his anti-nuclear works of the 1980s for CND to the powerful images he created in response to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Here, Kennard gives TateShots a tour of his studio in Hackney, London in anticipation of the release of his upcoming book, @earth.

"I take my hat off to you Sir, @earth looks great" - Banksy

"What you hold in your hands is a harrowing X-ray of the shadow side of the world ... If there's a word that's worth a thousand pictures, itÕs @earth. " - Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine and No Logo

@earth is as revolutionary in form as it is in content. It is a story without words told in the universal language of photomontage, long the favoured medium of radical artists. For the past four decades Peter Kennard has consistently challenged power structures and injustice, from his anti-nuclear works of the 1980s to the powerful images he created in response to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

@earth is a photo-essay in seven chapters, combining new works, made together with Tarek Salhany, with iconic images from throughout Kennard's 40-year career.

Shocking, haunting and unsettling, @earth makes a powerful statement about the current eco-crisis, the arms race and the injustices dominating today's world.

Peter Kennard was born in London in 1949. He is senior tutor in photography at the Royal College of Art and his work is in many major collections, including Tate, the V&A and the Imperial War Museum. His work has been published in numerous publications including The Guardian, The Observer, Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Independent, The Scotsman, New Statesman and Time Magazine.
