NEW FROM EVOL

Evol never fails to impress, his work for Nuart was exemplary and livened up a whole neighbourhood, it's still a talking point in the city and a pleasure to pass the pieces on the way downtown to Nuart towers. His latest work for MS Dockville Music Festival in Hamburg, though far from his usual urban playground, is equally stunning.

From Evol
Earlier this year I have been kindly invited to an art festival as part of the MS Dockville Music Festival, which is going to happen in mid August.

Usually I prefer to work on site by interfering with already existing structures.
As I came there first, this is what I found: end less meadow, trees and blue sky.
Not exactly what I play with usually. So I decided to cut open the idyll, and pretend there is no endless meadow, but only rooftop-gardens of the disgust underneath …

8 exhausting days of hard work (at least for people who usually cut paper only).

Thanks to my adorable helpers Matthias H. and Matthi R. and the Dockville Team, esp. Laura, Doro, Arvid, Felix, Christoph..

VIGILANTE VIGILANTE

"Vigilante Vigilante: The Battle for Expression" Official Trailer from max good on Vimeo.

A feature documentary about anti-graffiti vigilantes and the cultural significance of graffiti and street art. Premieres August 12th at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco. Hopefully we can get this to Nuart too, looks like an interesting take on the theme.

A new breed of crime-fighter now stalks the urban landscape: the anti-graffiti vigilante.
These dedicated blight warriors stop at nothing to rid their neighborhoods and cities of street art, stickers, tags, and posters.

Yet several of these vigilantes have become the very menace they set out to eliminate. In their relentless attempt to stamp out graffiti, they have turned to illegally and destructively painting other people’s property.

VIGILANTE VIGILANTE is the story of two filmmakers who set out to expose these mysterious characters and discover a battle of expression that stretches from the streets to academia.

OUTSIDE IN

OUTSIDE IN from NUART on Vimeo.

Photo : John Roger

OUTSIDE IN. STAVANGER NORWAY
CLOSES AUG 7TH.
Featuring 140 works from over 30 of the worlds leading urban artists..

Banksy, Os Gemeos, JR, Blu, Blek le Rat, Barry McGee, Ed Templeton, Mark Gonzales, Shepard Fairey, Dolk, Dan Witz, Borf, Faile, Jose Parla, Jeremy Geddes, David Shrigley, David Choe, Dotmasters, Swoon, Bast, Logan Hicks, Escif, Herakut, Ha Ha, Nick Walker, Charles Krafft, Martha Cooper, Steve Powers, Kaws, Retna, Chris Stain, Skewville, M-City, Date Farmers, Mark Jenkins & more..

We were looking at Deitch’s Art in the Streets and thought there were a few important artists missing. We were also a tad jealous so thought we’d knock up our own little provincial version here in Sunny Stavanger. Pop 120 000.

Dug through the portfolio’s and ripped everything down from the office and homestead walls and voila. 140 works from 30 of the worlds leading practioners of Street and Urban Art (or something like that), From Jeremy Geddes in Australia to Bäst in New York, David Shrigley in the UK to Charles Krafft in Seattle. The Gonz and Ed Templeton to Banksy and Os Gemeos AND BEYOND... I think you’ll agree, we pushed the envelope on what can rightly be termed "urban art", we've seen street art fans tastes develop far beyond a liking for the early humorous one layer stencil (Thanks Banksy) and it now embraces the likes of Hyperrealist oil painters such as Geddes as well as.. well, you get the point I guess.

The framing bill almost killed us, but what the hell, we have our own little expo. Over a thousand people through the doors and this little unlikely wooden housed city on the West Coast of Norway again, rekindles its love affair with all things 21st century street.

THREE DAYS

Three days. from CHAIR on Vimeo.

Beautifully shot film from Russian collective, and like they say, makes a pleasant change from timelapse and hip hopped action shots of street work.

"we are a collective from Russia, Nizghni Novgorod city and we have just finished our small video that describes the way we approach painting. We tried to build this video not as an ordinary time-laps or action shoot, but the representation of atmosphere of places during the painting."

STEVE POWERS

Flights of Genius by Stephen Powers from Jun Lee on Vimeo.

Ogilvy & Mather New York and Joshua Liner Gallery unveil a series of commissioned murals by celebrated artist Stephen Powers that reinterpret the words and quotes of agency founder David Ogilvy.

Power’s bold graphic style, reminiscent of vintage advertising illustrations puts a unique emphasis on famous Ogilvy sayings and transforms them into actionable words designed to inspire the viewer. Painted in bright colors on the North stairwell of the agency’s headquarters office, the murals run from the first to the 11th floor of the office building.

The murals are being unveiled to coincide with the 100th birthday of David Ogilvy, one of the most influential and important figures in modern advertising.

ON THE HOP WITH THE DOTMASTER

Dotmasters "On The Hop" from Martin Hawkes on Vimeo.

We were recently commissioned by the local brewery Lervig to produce a mural for the side of their building. After hanging the show Outside In, we hopped on a plane to Bergen for the (___)Capitalism? event then straight back to Stavanger to start on this. The Dotmaster really pulled one out of the bag with this. Martin Hawkes, film maker with Saft Film, actually, he is Saft film, came along with his assistant Frank and a bunch of ropey looking equipment including a 6m piece of aluminium rail. Turned out to be Martin's home build opensource camera tracking system. 5 days and nights of rain later.. and Bam ! Perhaps the best shot wall we've ever seen.

Congrats to all involved. Looks awesome !

Medusa, anamorph - Ninja1 and Mach505

"Turn thou from their sight, Risk no glance. The sight of Gorgon, if she cometh, would bring thee night from which were no returning."
- Dante, "Inferno", Canto IX, vv. 51-57

Remember how Perseus had to look at the Gorgon Medusa's image reflected in the mirroring shield given to him by Athena to avoid being turned into stone? Well, also our Medusa can be seen only from a certain viewpoint. Have a look for yourself, you'll be petrified.
This challenging anamorph was created in the factory/urban lab which hosted Sub Urb Art.

T&J ARTWALK OSLO

Oslo get's its own Street Art event. T&J Artwalks. It's for a great charity. So that's good.

Human Rights Watch

From the Press Release.

Some of the world’s most recognised contemporary street artists are coming to Oslo to show their support for Human Rights Watch by creating an Art Walk in the centre of Oslo 7-17 August. The art walk is a temporary art installation consisting of large artworks on the facades of eight central buildings covering more then 600 square meters of art for everyone to enjoy.

In addition there will be a sales exhibition of contemporary street art held at Blomqvist 19 August to 4 September, with sale proceeds benefiting Human Rights Watch. We are proud to announce that the exhibition will consist of artworks from artists such as D*Face, SEEN, The London Police, Shepard Fairey, Vitaly Rusakov (Mizer), Logan Hicks, Will Barras, Flying Fortress and Martin Whatson. The exhibition has been made possible through generous donations from artists, galleries and organisations.

Stay tuned on the blog to follow the daily updates on the creation of the art walk. Or if you have the possibility, have a walk around town and see it for yourself!
